BS7121 SAFE USE OF CRANES – APPOINTED PERSON TRAINING

In order to comply with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), the British Standards Institute provides the code of practice BS7121. This code of practice introduces the title of “Appointed Person” – the competent person responsible for developing a safe system of work for every lifting operation.

Competence is defined as “Sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge and experience”. This course provides the underpinning knowledge to be able to plan, organise and control a lifting operation.

ACCREDITATION OPTIONS

The training carried out will be in accordance with National Occupational Standards. There are 2 accreditation options available upon request: (Prior notice must be given)

Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS)

National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS)

In order to achieve the accreditation required, you will have to meet that particular accrediting bodies pre-test criteria and successfully complete an end test to their satisfaction.

(Please note that each of the accrediting bodies has their own pre-test criteria, for further details please contact us or the accrediting body direct).

Duration: Four Days

Three days training / tuition and 1day for testing purposes. Delegates will be required to pass written question papers and complete a final day practical exercise. For the benefit of delegates and employing organisations, we archive the test results for 5 years after the course end date.

Who should Attend.

The role of the Appointed Person is critical to lifting operations and carries a great deal of responsibility in law. This course is aimed at delegates who will be required to act as an Appointed Person and who do not have any formal training but do have experience and a working knowledge of cranes and lifting operations and are in a supervisory role. Only suitable personnel should be selected for this course.

Students who have little or no prior experience of lifting operations will not be excluded from the course but should be aware this may seriously hinder their chances of success.

Content:

• Legislation – Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment regulations (LOLER) and other regulations and Codes of Practice applicable to a lifting operation.

• Crane Terminology.

• Mobile / Tower Crane Appreciation.

• Planning Documentation.

• Slinging Techniques.

• Crane Stability, Duty Charts and Rated Capacity Indicators.

• BS7121 Safe Use of Cranes range

• Planning a Lift and preparing – Method Statement, Risk Assessment, study as appropriate to BS7121 part 1.

Training Outcome.

Following the course delegates will have received sufficient knowledge and training to allow them to plan a lift that is commensurate with their level of past experience. We recommend that all newly trained Appointed Persons are supervised by a competent person for a period of time and a record of such lift planning is maintained.
